Pastor Austin Gardner and VBM Director Jeff Bush continue the discussion of goals on the mission field that was started last week by explaining the goals of the first two years. Now the missionary is back from their first furlough and are ready to start their first full term. What should they do? What are their goals? Listen carefully to find out!

  • Recap:
    • First two years you are adapting to culture
    • Learning the language
    • Then you go to America for a short furlough
    • Then back to the field for your first full term
  • You have limited time
    • Don’t have a countdown clock to go to America
    • Your home is on the field
    • You should keep in front of you your limited time
    • You won’t be on the field forever
    • You need to have men trained
    • If you don’t aim for anything, you won’t get anything
    • You have 208 weeks.
    • At the end of that, you come home on furlough
    • You are not a pastor
    • You are a missionary, so you need to train someone to take over.
    • Get it in your head from day one, and it will make a big difference
  • First, set up your house.
    • Your wife needs to be comfortable
    • It is hard in some places
    • But every moment you spend setting up your house is time you’re spending not training someone
    • You’re burning up your 208 weeks.
    • If you do your two years right, you could have already found and maybe even rented a place
    • Your wife and kids need a good house
  • Then find a church building
    • You should have already surveyed the area
    • Where are other churches?
    • Look for an upper lower class or lower middle class place
    • You don’t have to focus on one at a time
    • Look for a church building and a house
    • You’re going to work 60 hours from the day you land
    • Don’t make excuses for why you can’t!
  • Get a vehicle
    • Your family needs a vehicle
    • Maybe get two if you need two
    • You need to take care of your family
  • Get people to come
    • We start off as church planters
    • Run campaigns
    • Have English Classes
    • Do mail outs
    • Get people to come
  • English Classes
    • You don’t have to be a great English speaker
    • Don’t have a poot-head attitude
    • You need to have a good attitude
    • Don’t make excuses
    • You can make yourself more open
    • The people come to Jesus through us
    • Like the woman at the well
    • The people came through her, but they stayed for Jesus.
    • English classes and any other event is just a way for us to bring people to church
  • Saturate the area
    • Have 7 groups of 10,000 invitations
    • Fish don’t just jump in the boat
    • You have to work!
    • What are you doing with your 60 hours of work each week?
    • If you sow God will give increase
    • If you don’t sow, don’t complain when God doesn’t increase!
  • Look for guys to train
    • As soon as you start, look for men to train
    • You aren’t bringing people just to watch you
    • You want them to get involved
    • Have a full scheduled
    • Services multiple times a week as well as youth activities and other things
  • Why have more services?
    • Hebrews 10:25
    • Some people will come to one service and not another
    • Don’t make excuses for why you can’t have services.
    • Have multiple services
  • Discipleship
    • From day one you should be discipling
    • Your wife should be discipling ladies
    • Don’t do it one on one at first
    • Do it in groups
    • Look for the guy that is shining the brightest
    • Someone who is excited about it and comes to everything
    • They just love it
    • That is the guy who is headed to ministry
    • Start an institute for lay people
    • Then start a Bible college for the guys that rise to the top
    • Don’t settle for one
    • You need everyone you can get so you can have someone who will make it in ministry
    • You will spend 80% of your time with 20% of the people.
  • Get people involved
    • Get the guys who is most interested really involved
    • Put the ball in his court
    • Have him memorize a verse
    • Have him read a book with you
    • Correct his understanding of the thing your studying
    • Have him correct your language
    • Get a car you can fit a bunch of people in
    • It’s like a mobile classroom!
    • You want to use your time well
    • Everyone can have a job, not just saved people
    • Have them set up chairs, hand out bulletins, etc.
    • If they feel involved then they will keep coming
    • Ministry isn’t just singing or teaching or preaching
    • There are a hundred things you can do
    • Get people plugged in as fast as possible
    • If you are doing everything yourself as a missionary, then you are not doing your job!
    • Tell them how important their job is
    • Tell them how vital it is for you
    • Thank them profusely
  • What to Preach at the Beginning
    • We always preach the Gospel and tell people how to get saved
    • Learn from their society
    • What interests them?
    • Are they interested in family, dating, prophesy, or something like that?
    • Take that thing and find a way to preach the Gospel from it
    • You want subjects that are interesting to the people that you can get to the Gospel from
  • How long do you preach?
    • You shouldn’t preach 45 minutes until you are very good in the language.
    • Even when you are great, don’t go far beyond that.
    • Twenty to Thirty minutes is plenty
    • You could have mini sermons explaining offerings or salvation
    • Get them involved in the preaching
    • Have them take up offering and serve in the choir
    • Have them correct you while you preach
    • Have them give feedback or ask questions.
    • Preaching ins’t necessary just yelling.
    • It’s communicating God’s truth
  • Being a good teacher
    • The Law of the Learner and the Law of the Teacher are great resources
    • Education is misunderstood today
    • We think that it is the students responsibility to learn
    • If they don’t, that is their fault
    • That is not true
    • It is dependent on you as the teacher/preacher!
    • One of the greatest sins for the preacher is to make the most interesting book, the Bible, boring!
