Today’s reading II Peter 1-3

II Peter 3:15-16 And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; 16 As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Peter writes about the things that Paul has written and says, some of what he writes is hard to understand. That should be of some comfort to us and also a strong warning. If you think you understand everything you read then maybe you are being just a bit arrogant when Peter the Apostle says it was hard for him.

Also there is another lesson here. It seems that those that are ignorant, unprepared, immature, not studied and those that are unstable, shift with every wind of doctrine that comes by seem to think that they can understand. They twist the Scriptures. They get themselves and others into trouble.

You would be better off to approach the Scriptures humbly and think that you can’t understand and just accept the Scriptures instead of thinking that you get it all. After all, it is God’s Word. It is not simple. It does take study and hard work. You do need the Holy Spirit to guide and direct you as you study.

Study the Bible. Do not think that it is always easy. Be humble enough to admit that you do not understand it all. Take your time. God will teach you if you keep working and you will understand more and more every day!

I do agree with you pastor, we need to be humble as we read His word. It’s true we will not understand the mystery sometimes but His Holy Spirit will help us to understand when we humble ourselves and submit to Him.
