Genesis 28:15-16 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. 16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
The over arching theme of this story is how God is at work in the life of Jacob. God is transforming Jacob into the image of Christ. He is making a man out of the mess that is Jacob and his life. Jacob is very fleshly. He lives his life on his own terms. He is a conniving schemer! He does what it takes to get ahead. He is not above trying to use God for his own purposes.
No matter what is going on in Jacob’s opinion God has a plan and an agenda. God is forming the man He will use to show His glory in and through Israel. So Jacob sleeps and he sees a vision. He is afraid. He will continue to try and make deals with God to advance himself. He has no idea that God will form him into the man he can use.
That is the story of our lives. We scheme, plot, and plan. Sometimes we even do that about the ministry. We try to get ahead. We try to make something of ourselves, even much of ourselves. But God has another plan. He is making us into what and who He can use.
We are predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, Jesus. It is wonderful to watch God work when you realize this!
