I Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

  • As the story starts Samuel is just sad that God didn’t use Saul
  • When it appears that everything God is doing has messed up God says, I got this! 16:1 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Beth-lehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
  • God will always accomplish His purposes.
  • Though he allowed Saul to mess up God wasn’t messed up
  • You may see that not everything works out like you planned but you can trust that God has it all under control
  • Samuel loves Saul but is afraid of him. Amazingly God provides Samuel with a cover when he has to risk his life to accomplish God’s purpose 16:2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
  • Some of our missionaries may go to preach where it is illegal and have to provide a cover
  • Some Christians may question if that is ok
  • I simply look here and realize that God did it
  • I know that I can’t make a normative or imperative out of a declarative but it is interesting
  • When God sends his man on an errand he often doesn’t know all the steps that will take him to get where he has to get 16:3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
  • There is so much we can learn from David’s life
  • God was preparing David to be the king over Israel
  • He will be anointed but it will be a long time before he gets the ministry God has for him
  • God is at work in your life. He is preparing you now for what He has for you. Learn where you are and watch what God is doing
  1. Work unnoticed, no selfies as God prepares you. The work God does that no one sees as he prepares you!
    1. The great man of God comes to anoint a son of Jesse king
    2. His dad doesn’t even invite him to the house, no bath, no change of clothes, just do what you been doing
      1. He is keeping the sheep
      2. Seems almost forgotten
      3. Why didn’t his dad at least bring him in to watch the proceedings I Samuel 16:11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
    3. When David arrives Samuel is told to anoint him because he is to be king 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
      1. David was a good looking redhead
      2. Ruddy could just mean that he was healthy
    4. David is anointed in front of his family members only 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
      1. At this moment God’s Spirit came on David as His man
      2. He is prepared for leadership
      3. God is at work in his life
      4. The most horrible thing is that God pulled His power, His anointing, from Saul at this moment 16:14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
        1. Saul now is alone with no help
        2. Not only that God has sent an evil spirit to trouble him
        3. God sent or allowed is not really important to the story here
        4. Saul now is depressed, in a dark mood, he knows it is over
        5. Satan has room for attack because of the controlling, suspicious, revengeful man Saul was
          1. We would be wise to know that we need our shield lifted high to stop Satan’s attacks
          2. We open the door for him
          3. He knows our weaknesses because we telegraph them to him
          4. Even the men that worked with Saul recognized that Saul was under spiritual attack 16:15 And Saul’s servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
      5. Apparently David returns to his job after being anointed 16:19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
        1. After all of this when Saul wants a harp player David is back with the sheep
        2. You would think that David would be making plans for his fame, etc but apparently he is doing what he had always done, keeping the sheep
        3. Notice David didn’t go looking for a position but was called up by the king
    5. What kind of character did it take to humbly wait on God when David already knew who he was, that Samuel had anointed him king but he humbly waits
  2. Work hard in preparation for whatever God has for you. David had worked hard developing talents that God would use and that would open doors for him
    1. He was an accomplished harp player 16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
      1. He was known for his bravery, a valiant man
      2. He was a man of war, knew how to fight
      3. He had character, prudent in matters
      4. God was with him and people knew that
      5. David was already a man among men
    2. David’s gifts will open doors for him and take him before great men Proverbs 18:16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, And bringeth him before great men.
      1. I can imagine Solomon telling his son these stories to show him the truth of this proverb
      2. God is taking David forward but David has been working hard to get there without even knowing it
    3. Work hard where ever you are and God will use that to move you to where you can do more Proverbs 22:29 Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; He shall not stand before mean men.
    4. Notice that David already had these gifts before he was anointed
      1. These didn’t come by some miracle but rather by hard work
      2. David didn’t get this because he worked at getting the job but as he worked others noticed I Samuel 16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
  3. Develop a good testimony Proverbs 27:2 Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth; A stranger, and not thine own lips.
    1. It is God that promotes us, not ourselves Proverbs 75:6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, Nor from the west, nor from the south.7 But God is the judge: He putteth down one, and setteth up another.
    2. David had built a testimony that will eventually get him to the king but that doesn’t seem to have been his intention
    3. He built his testimony because he loved God and what God was doing in his life. He wasn’t acting so he could get something 16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. 17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
    4. Do we do right, work hard, etc so we can get noticed or just because we want to do right
    5. David did right no matter who was watching
I Samuel 18:5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
    6. David’s wise and good behavior scared Saul
I Samuel 18:15 Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.
  4. Prepare before the battle! Do the little things before God calls you to the big ones 16:21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer. 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
    1. David fought the the lion and the bear I Samuel 17:34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
    2. When David fights with Goliath it will be with weapons that he has practiced with I Samuel 17:39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
    3. We look for big battles for our pride but aren’t willing to be diligent in small battles that God has placed in our lives
    4. We want big ministry and recognition when we having practices and trained with our weapons
  5. David learned to control his mouth, his attitude
I Samuel 16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-lehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
    1. He learned to deal with a tyrant for a boss and king
    2. Wrong words, looks, or attitudes could have spelled the end of his career and life
    3. Instead David gained their confidence
    4. David learned to deal with Saul when he was in his worst moods 16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
      1. Amazing how good music blessed Saul and got him out of his bad moods
      2. When the evil, doubting, dark clouds of depression come over you consider listening to some God honoring, Bible teaching, full of truth music that will get you back on track spiritually
