Today’s reading Acts 21-23
Acts 22:25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
Paul is arrested and about to be beaten. He quickly calls to the centurion and ask him if the law is being followed in the way he is being treated. Paul is a Roman citizen and has certain rights as such. He does not feel that it is wrong to call upon his right to be protected.
As you minister and serve God there are two extremes. One is the person who is so fearful that they will not testify. They will do nothing that might put them in harm’s way more than just live in the country. They hardly if ever mention the name of Jesus. They learn code talk even when they talk among themselves. Others are trying to be so spiritual that they wouldn’t use their civilian rights. Paul did.
I think it is a good example that you can ask for a fair trial. You can ask to speak to your embassy. You can use certain rights.
We should be bold witnesses willing to risk it all. But we should also be willing to use the rights that God has given us to protect us for another day of preaching!
