Pastor Austin Gardner and VBM Director Jeff Bush discuss the critical importance of the faith of a missionary in his work.

  • How is a missionary’s faith important in establishing a strong national church?
    • It is so important that you believe God and that God can save, raise up, and train.
      • When the Lord was in His ministry on the earth, there were places where He did not a work there because of the lack of faith
      • As a missionaries, God has called us to our work, and we cannot lack in our faith
      • Without faith it is impossible to please Him
      • God is a big God, He’s going to do a big work, so we can be men of faith
      • God not only saves and builds a church, He raises up men to do His ministry!
    • There is a mentality in some missionaries where they feel like the nationals are no good and can’t do anything
      • If we believe that the nationals can’t do anything, then were aren’t going to work towards training men
      • God isn’t racist or nationalistic. The same Holy Spirit in me is in them!
    • Missionaries sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that Americans are the only people who can live holy and do things for God
      • If God can really save, He can really convert people!
      • We can’t be racist!
      • If you aren’t careful, you can develop that attitude when things become hard and go wrong
    • We mistakenly glorify America
      • It’s not like America is immune to sin!
      • God is the one who transformed us, and He can transform nationals too!
      • Spurgeon, David Livingston, Paul the Apostle, and even Jesus weren’t Americans!
    • Faith is you begging God in pray to give you men to lead your churches
      • You expect God to do it, and you watch Him do it
      • You believe that God can use them to give the money to build their church
      • It is God’s church and He will build it
      • We should have faith that God can provide!
      • If you don’t believe that God can raise your support, that He can give you the language, that He can provide a place to meet, that He won’t save anyone, or that He won’t send a man to train, then He won’t!
    • When Jeff left Argentina, he left men that were trained to lead the churches
      • They can send missionaries and support missionary and continue on without the missionary!
    • Do you believe that God can make a church live? Do you believe that God can raise up leaders?
      • Why don’t we have strong national leadership?
      • Because we say that we can’t trust them to not steal or we can’t trust them to do it as well as an American
      • If you step out of the way, you’d be amazed at what God can do!
    • God might bury his worker, but He won’t bury His work!
      • God’s work has been going on for thousands of years and will go on long after He takes us home!
    • Your beliefs affect your behaviors
      • If you believe that God wants to do a great work, it affects your whole outlook!
      • Really believe that God wants to do something.
    • Don’t be like a parent who wants to control their kids when their 35
      • You need to let them go and grow up
  • How can too many American missionaries in the same area hinder the work?
    • Why do you need so many?
      • Because you can’t trust the nationals!
      • If you have two American missionaries, you don’t need the nationals to help
      • Since we tend to think that Americans are better, the nationals aren’t allowed to do ministry
    • We need to be needy, allowing them to help us!
    • We do believe in working in teams
      • There is a lot of power in teams
      • But there are also dangers in teams
  • How can you get work done without affecting the work?
    • The missionaries should start their own work and train their own people
      • Together you can have fellowship meetings
      • Together you can have conferences and camps
      • You need to let each other do their own work
      • You really need to work hard and not live under the shadow of another missionary
    • Buenos Aires as 14,000,000 people
      • You could have 14 missionaries with 1,000,000
      • There really is plenty of work for missionaries
    • Your goal is to train national leaders, not to rely on an American to do the work
    • Too many missionaries can hinder the work because you don’t trust nationals
      • We’ve got to be needy so that nationals will step up and help
      • That’s why starting multiple churches is a good idea
      • You have too much work for yourself and need help
      • You need to share the work with nationals!
    • Missionaries should be preparing nationals for when he is on furlough
      • Your goal should never be that another missionary would take over your work
      • Teach the nationals because you won’t always be there and you need the help of the national
      • They are important and needed!
      • Not sharing the work with nationals weakens the work
    • We get into the mentality that regular people are just dumb sheep that can’t make decisions and that we keep them afloat
      • That is not true!
      • Quit it with the arrogance and let the nationals do the work
      • If you aren’t careful, you will build a group of people who are dependent on you
      • Why would you treat nationals like they are so much less than you?
      • We need to change this attitude and start loving them and looking forward to what God can do with them!
    • Our job is not to be a pastor, but to find the nationals, train them, and let them run!
      • God can use anyone!
      • There is no reason for you to continue to act like you are superior for some reason!
