Genesis 25:31 And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. 32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

Esau is hungry. Jacob has prepared some food. I wonder if Esau was as serious as he sounds. Sometimes we joke about things that we shouldn’t and in ways that we shouldn’t. Regardless, Esau decides that his birthright is worth only a bowl of beans.

When you are hungry you will often sacrifice the things of real value! Esau was on deck. He was to be the man of God. He was to lead the home. He was to be the spiritual leader. He gives all that up for a bowl of beans. Something of long lasting value for something that will be consumed and gone in a matter of minutes.

I think maybe he didn’t really think Jacob would take him up on it. Maybe he thought it didn’t matter what he said. I have no idea. I only know that Esau makes a tremendously large mistake here.

I have done the same, ran my mouth when I should have kept it shut! Joked when it wasn’t time for jokes. Joked about things that shouldn’t be joked about.

Been so worried about something temporary that I was willing to trade something eternal.

Let this be a lesson for us! Count the value of your spiritual blessings!
