Nehemiah 8:8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.
God’s people need to know what God says. God has spoken to us in His Word. We do not need what the pastor thinks or the latest message that the preacher got from God unless it comes from the Word of God.
In Nehemiah we see that the people wanted to know what God said. They gathered to hear the Book read to them. They stood there and quietly listened.
I feel like many of God’s people have lost interest in God, the church, and the things of God because our message has become trivial. We now do what they do on the talk shows on TV but we just aren’t as good at it as they are.
We are not stand up comedians. We are not pop psychologists. We are men of God, men of the Book.
We should follow this simple example given in Nehemiah.
Read to the people from the Book.
Read it clearly and distinctly.
Give the sense of what it says. Help them understand it.
We should work at getting them to understand.
That is real Bible preaching. People want to hear from God. They want to know what He says. They come to church not to see the preacher or hear his opinions but to know about God.
When they get the standard fare of today all that they can think is that it is a waste. They do not come back.
Let’s change the menu. Back to the Book we go!
