Get a Church Started

  1. Start an indigenous church which means you will have to think of everything you do. You must leave it where it will go forward if you leave it!
  2. Discuss the funnel
  3. Our priority in church planting as in everything we do is to train leaders. It is not to get numbers. It is not to build a ministry. It is to build men.
  4. When you start your church you must be counting down the Sundays until you will no longer be in charge.
  5. We are not concerned about having Bible School, children’s programs, etc. We are concerned about training men. So we get the man before the ministry once we are started
  6. Remember to work with men between the ages of 15 and 25
  7. Treat older people with respect. They will be the backbone of the church that supports the man that you train.
  8. Do all in your power to raise your man to a position of respect and leadership among his people-the tie!
  9. Place Nationals in places of leadership from day one and let them fail — that is how they are going to learn. Do not expect to find leaders that are already ready. Do not expect perfection.
  10. Other missionaries can severely limit what your own people can and will do
  11. Plan trips away and place more and more responsibility on their shoulders.
  12. Have business meetings, men’s meetings, etc to get them used to deciding what should be done.
  13. Force them to take on more and more responsibility as the days and years go by.
  14. Never do anything alone and when you are with them you must constantly be teaching them.
  15. Always have more to do than you can do without their help.
  16. Be a leader of leaders. Always be training leaders. Give the majority of your time and investment to leaders, so that the people can see that you believe in them and what they are doing
  17. Respect the national leader as a real leader and not your peon, especially in public, because the people will catch your attitude.
  18. Remember that serving God and doing the work of God is more caught than taught.
  19. Teach them to do the work and have them produce and get more of the credit than you do.
  20. Never quit studying and analyzing your work and that of others.
  21. Help them to get their lions and bears so that they can be prepared to kill Goliath.
