Today’s reading Numbers 4:21-6:27
Numbers 4:47 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation,
Earlier the Levites weren’t numbered. I think that might have been to keep Israel from worrying about how many people they had to give total care to!
Now they are numbered but they are being numbered so that the work can be equally divided among them. They only worked in this ministry from the age of 30 to 50. It was hard physical labor. They had to carry the tabernacle. They had to take it down and put it up. It was grueling work. So the years that they could or would work were limited.
The important lesson however is that they counted them and made sure that each person did his part.
I wonder how many people sit on the sideline and do not do their part in the local church. They do not give equally to see the work go forward. (Equal giving means that we give in percentage not amounts. If all give proportionately then it will be equal giving! Some will be giving very large sums but that will be because God has blessed them with the ability to do just that!)
We do not carry the ministries equally. We come late, leave early, let others be concerned that all is done! What would happen if the servants were counted and the work divided.
We would accomplish much more! We would each have less pressure on us! The work would go forward better than ever! Every one would know that we are all involved and be impressed with the work that God is doing through His people!
