I need to remind the teens of the even on Friday night. The “Sunday Review: is about to come out on the blog and if I don’t post it on the Facebook group people may not read it. Sunday we are having a special event, and we need to get people sharing the information. I don’t need to forget to remind people of daylight savings time. I need to remember to write an article about our guest speaker coming next month. Will people remember we meet on Tuesday night during the week of Thanksgiving? Will I remember to remind people of the Thanksgiving service? – the mind of the typical assistant pastor

All these thoughts could run through my head at any given moment. Yeah, I know I can get the information on my calendar and my task list. I do that (on good days). But you then you have to leave that program then login into your blog and social media.

Last week my friend Beau Carpenter, pastor of Vision Baptist Church of Cobb County, wanted to meet and talk about event promotion, websites, and some social media ideas he had. To be honest, I wasn’t excited about the meeting. I love talking with Beau, but that topic just reminds me of how far behind I am on these things and how much work it takes to stay ahead. I am grateful and excited he presented me a solution and not a list of problems.

As Beau showed me his calendar, I was blown away how organized and far ahead he was in his plan for social media promotion. I didn’t realize at the time I was looking at his CoSchedule calendar for his church.

Here is a picture of my calendar currently. The calendar is at the center of how it all works. It took me about 7 minutes (yes I was timing) to connect my CoSchedule account to our churches website (we use the WordPress platform) and to all of our social media accounts. Now I can schedule blog posts and social media updates all from one place.

Here is a picture showing some of the options of what you can schedule. I started by writing a blog article about the Dodge Hunger Food Drive. I scheduled the post to come out later in the day. Then I posted the information on our church’s public page and in our private group. These are things I would normally do. I would plan to share it again later in the week and the following Thursday. It would help remind people to bring cans of food for our teen’s food drive. Those last couple of steps would very likely not happen. I would move on to another event or article that needed to be promoted later in the day or tomorrow. As you can see I could schedule an action for tomorrow and next week. It gives our content more of a shelf life.

Last Saturday we have an event for our community. We had around 35 first time visitors. Of those visitors about 20 of them indicated, through our registration card, they came from some form of online promotion. Of those 20 more than half of them indicated they learned about it through Facebook. I tell you that to let you know why I don’t think social media is just a game kids play. I will not argue that a tremendous amount of time is being wasted by social media. That doesn’t mean that its power cannot be harnessed to help get and keep the information you want to share with other people. It is more than the bulletin board at the local coffee shop. It is even had larger crowds gathered than you once would have found hanging out in front of the skating rink. To ignore online and social media promotion is not to go where most of the people you trying to reach live.
